Malden, Massachusetts is a growing suburban community in the Greater Boston region. Centrally located at the intersection of several highways in eastern Massachusetts, the city offers convenient access to Boston, Cape Cod, the rugged coast of Maine, the snowy mountains of New Hampshire and all the major cities of the northeast. Settled by the Puritans nearly four centuries ago, the city features a striking blend of historic charm and contemporary amenities unique to the New England region.
The city of Malden grew out of a modest, hilly settlement just north of the Mystic River called Mystic Side, first established by the Puritans on land purchased from the Pawtucket Indians in 1640. Renamed by early settler Joseph Hills in honor of his hometown of Maldon, England, the community was incorporated as a city in 1882.
Residents state proudly that their hometown has always been at the heart of things; the city has borne writers and industrialists, revolutionaries and governors, actors and artists. From Mayor Elisha Converse to Governor and U.S. Ambassador to Italy John Volpe, from actor Walter Brennan to Olympian Louise Stokes to painter Frank Stella, Maldonians have participated in every facet of America's cultural and political history.
Even now, the community sits at the heart of an innovative New England economy. Just ten minutes from downtown Boston, the city is situated in close proximity to metropolitan Boston's major arteries and interstates. Residents enjoy direct access to one of the world's busiest international airports, and the city is serviced by both commuter rail and the MBTA Orange Line.
Some of America's best universities are within a stone's throw of the city - including Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, MIT, Boston University, Northeastern University, and Wellesley College - as are many of the world's best high-tech and medical research facilities. The city is only minutes away from some of New England's great beaches. Amidst all this activity, the community has tenaciously preserved its colonial heritage and neighborly small-town traditions.
The city enjoys an active business community, a downtown in the process of rejuvenation, a fine system of parks and playgrounds and a variety of social, cultural and fraternal organizations. To loyal residents and newcomers alike, Malden offers the best of both worlds; ready availability to the cultural nexus of the big city and the close-knit atmosphere of a small town.

Massachusetts: The Past, Present & Future of Our Country
"Why Massachusetts?"
Why not? Located in the heart of New England, Massachusetts is the region's most popular state. Rich with the history of our country and still on the cutting edge of technology, Massachusetts offers a perfect blend of the past, present and future.
From the stunning seacoast, Cape Cod, the islands and Boston to the peaceful beauty of the Berkshires and the Blue Hills, Massachusetts offers something to everyone! Every year, new residents are drawn to Massachusetts for the diversity of culture and activities available in Boston, the picturesque seaside communities, and the quaint rural towns for which New England is known.
With New Hampshire and Vermont on the northern border, New York to the west, and Connecticut and Rhode Island bordering on the south, Massachusetts is the most centrally located of the New England States. Cape Cod juts out into the Atlantic Ocean on the east like a bent arm, creating an easily recognizable state shape. A day trip to one of Massachusetts' beautiful beaches or islands is easily accessible from any part of the state, as is a trip to the Berkshires in the western part of the state.
For all of these reasons and more, it's easy to see why people are so proud to say they live in Massachusetts!
